October GHOSTWRITER #Giveaway! 22nd Excerpt

All this month, I'll be celebrating the second birthday of my novel, Ghostwriter, with excerpts and prizes.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. My hero, Seth, was a witness to the terrible events of that war as an ambulance driver. Sara discovers his letters home in a trunk hidden in the attic of the island house she's renting.

Along with the excerpts, I'll be sharing some photographs that inspired me as I was writing the novel.

Today's excerpt:

“I think it looks more like an elephant,” Sara insisted.

Today’s “date” activity was lying on a blanket spread out on one of the dunes and watching the clouds roll overhead. She didn’t know if they were the real clouds, what she would see if she woke and looked out the window, or if they were Seth’s invention. Either way, it was lovely just to lie here, snuggled up against his side.

Seth had surprised her by appearing in jeans and a T-shirt, identical to her Ramones T-shirt—he confessed he couldn’t remember any of the others. He looked so young, especially when he smiled, which he did frequently today. She had only seen that goofy grin once before, in the memory of his wedding.

“I still say a bear,” he argued. “Where is the trunk?”

“That little squiggle beside his head. He’s holding it aloft.”

“That squiggle is the bear’s ear.”

Sara turned her head and nipped his own ear playfully, which led to him seeking revenge, and Sara giggling like a fool when he tickled her to try to get her to take her hands away from her ears. That led to his body being poised over hers, his eyes hot, the tickling forgotten in favor of a kiss which set her heart to pounding.

“An alabaster flame,” Seth murmured. His lips trailed down her neck, but they stopped at the collar of her T-shirt.

Sara groaned in frustration.

“Soon,” he promised.

She stopped breathing. “How about
now?”

He shook his head with a rueful grin. “You are making this difficult, Sara.”

“If I keep trying, will your resolve falter?”

“I hope not.” Seth’s tone changed from playful to serious. “I’m determined to give you the romance you should have.” He flipped over onto his back beside her. “And . . . well . . . there’s something I have to tell you . . . before.”

“Why?”

“You deserve to know before we take that step together. You should know what kind of man you’re taking into your arms.”

About the book:

Newly single, unemployed, and with her savings dwindling to an all-time low, Sara thinks things are finally looking up when she lands a job ghostwriting a popular politician’s biography, and rents the affordable island home of her favorite author, Seth Fortner, who mysteriously disappeared in 1925. Strange things begin to happen as objects break, go missing, and terrifying visions appear, making Sara wonder if Seth ever left, or if she is slowly losing her mind.

She gets no answers from his family who closely guards the secret of his disappearance. Through an old trunk of letters Sara discovers in the attic of her seaside cottage, Sara unravels the mystery and becomes caught up in a tale of greed, lost love, and the horrors of WWI. Will she be the one to break the “Fortner Curse” by helping Seth conquer his demons, and heal both of their hearts in the process?
