This year is also the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. My hero, Seth, was a witness to the terrible events of that war as an ambulance driver. Sara discovers his letters home in a trunk hidden in the attic of the island house she's renting.

As if Seth could see the turbulent direction of Sara’s thoughts, he put his hands on her shoulders. “It was part of the process of letting her go. I had to let go of all the anger, all the hurt. People think the opposite of love is hate, but truly, its opposite is indifference. Hate is still an emotional involvement. And it’s all gone now.”She looked up at him, not sure of how to take this, whether she could accept he had forgiven, and yet had let go of his feelings for Marcella. The two seemed somewhat counterintuitive to her.
“It wasn’t completely her fault. I know this now. I wasn’t any kind of a husband to her. Yes, we ate at the same table and slept under the same roof, but I was always somewhere else in my mind. I think she would have rather I had a mistress. A flesh and blood woman she could have competed with, but my imaginary world? It was someplace she could not follow me and she was left behind, alone, with just my shell.”
“She didn’t understand!” Sara burst out.
“Of course she didn’t understand. I never told her. She tried. She tried so hard, but I wouldn’t let her in. I betrayed her, long before she betrayed me.”

About the book:
