“Thank you for coming with me. I don’t know if I would have been able to do what you did.” Matthew smirked, trying to lighten the mood. “At least, not with the same results.”
Cali blushed and Matthew almost lost it. He wanted to touch her, to crush her body against his and kiss her within an inch of her life.
Instead, he backed toward the elevators. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
She grinned and began walking to her car.
He hesitated, then shook his head and continued toward the elevator.
As he waited for the elevator to reach him, he heard an engine rev. A small smile pulled at his lips as he thought of Cali heading home.
The elevator dinged right as a squeal of tires caught his attention. He whirled around in time to see a dark blue sedan he didn’t recognize speed up the exit ramp.
His heart pounded in his chest as he took off at a full-out run.
Cali.

Author Bio

Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.
At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.

Since then Sherri has published several novels, many of which have hit the top 100 in their category on Amazon. Writing has become a creative outlet that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. Welcome to Serpent's Kiss (Serpent's Kiss 0.5)

After losing her husband unexpectedly, Katrina Mayer decided to open Serpent’s Kiss. She wanted it to be a place where she and her fellow kinksters could play and socialize.

Five years after the doors opened, the club is everything she’d hoped it would be. On Friday and Saturday nights, Serpent’s Kiss is filled with men and women who share a similar desire to explore the pleasures BDSM has to offer. The club has continued to grow, and over the years, many of its members have become friends.

The one thing Katrina didn’t expect when she’d decided to open a club was the human drama that came with it. Learning to balance her life as the club mistress has taken some getting used to, but she wouldn’t change a thing.

Beth Davenport has no interest in getting involved with another man for the foreseeable future. To say her last relationship ended in disaster would be a colossal understatement. The only reason she agrees to put in an appearance at Serpent’s Kiss, a private kink club in downtown St. Louis, is because her best friend, Nicole, won’t quit nagging her. When she walks in the door that night, the last thing she expects to do is meet a man who will have her reconsidering her ban on men.

As a captain with the St. Louis Fire Department, Drew Parker is used to being in charge. His crew relies on him to make sure they know what they’re doing and return home to their families after every shift. It isn’t, however, what he wants in a relationship. Drew decides to join Serpent’s Kiss to see if what appeals to him in fantasy is something he wants to explore in the real world. He’s also hoping that he’ll be lucky enough to meet a woman with whom he can explore his desires. The night Beth walks into the club, he is intrigued. Drew has to get to know her better.

After what happened to her, Beth is reluctant to get involved with Drew. It doesn’t matter that he is sweet and charming. She’s been burned before and Beth doesn’t think she can survive having her heart crushed again. Drew, however, won’t take no for an answer. He wants a relationship and is determined to chip away at her defenses until she relents. Will she give him a chance, or did her ex leave her with scars too deep to heal?

The phone on the desk buzzed startling her. She placed a calming hand on her chest and pushed the intercom button like Lisa showed her. “Yes?”

“Matthew Andersen is here to see you.” Lisa’s voice came through clear and confident.

“Who?” Cali asked.

“Mr. Andersen. Head of Security.”

Well . . . nothing like jumping in with both feet.

“Send him in.”

Cali stood and straightened her suit jacket. She could do this.

The door opened and a man not much older than her entered the room. He strolled confidently across the room and offered her his hand. The most intriguing blue eyes she’d ever seen stared back at her as she shook his hand.

She cleared her throat as her gaze drifted over his dark hair and broad shoulders. “You must be Mr. Andersen.”

For a moment, she didn’t think he was going to answer. “And you must be Ms. Stanton.”

They stood there for a moment, the air around them felt heavy and charged. She felt warmth rushing to her cheeks and looked away.

Swiping her hand back, she hurried back behind the desk and attempted to collect herself. It didn’t matter that she could still feel the burn of his palm against her skin. Or that the way he seemed to own that suit he was wearing reminded her how long it had been since she’d had a man in her bed. She had a job to do and it didn’t include fooling around with one of her father’s employees.

Cali cleared her throat. “Um . . . why don’t you take a seat, Mr. Andersen?”

He lowered his tall frame into the offered chair.

She retook her own seat and placed both her hands in her lap.

They sat in silence for several moments. He seemed to be assessing her. For what, she had no idea, but Cali wasn’t sure she liked it.

“My father said there were some things you needed to discuss with me.”  She attempted to sound as businesslike as possible.

“Yes.” He paused. “What did Alvin tell you?”

Cali tried not to let his brisk tone bother her. “Not much. Just that he needed someone he could trust running his company right now.” She gathered up her courage and leveled a look at him Cali saved for her most difficult patients. “What’s going on?”

SUMMARY
When their plane goes down in the Canadian wilderness, Finch Rhodes’ and Clay Gandy’s lives become entwined. Together they face the unforgiving elements of unfamiliar terrain in winter, wild animals, raging rivers, and their own growing weakness from hunger, shock, and exposure. With their lives at stake as well as the lives of those depending on them to find help, Finch and Clay are forced to rely on one another, and they forge a bond that lasts even after they are rescued.

Finch’s struggles to adjust to normal life upon returning home are hindered by her broken engagement, her friend’s disapproval of her friendship with Clay, her parents’ marital issues, and her brother’s uncharacteristic belligerence and suspicious request. And by the seemingly harmless mishaps that soon escalate into brutal attacks. After she is injured, Finch once again comes to rely on Clay. But as the connection between them deepens, the threat against her grows.

With her life in jeopardy and danger blurring the lines between friend and foe, Finch must decide if those she loves are the ones she can trust, or if the greatest peril lurks closer to home than she could have ever imagined.
EXCERPT
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, “the captain has advised me we’ll be making a precautionary landing.”

The elderly woman started sobbing.

The front of the plane yawed back and forth, the movement sharp, bouncing, and disorienting. When I glanced out the window, we were just breaking through the cloud cover, and the forested ground was rushing closer.

I pointed out the exits and the escape path lighting, and then explained the brace position of crossing their arms, placing them on the seatback in front of them, and resting their foreheads on their wrists.

“I’ll help you if you need me to,” said the man in 1A.

I swallowed and felt the hot press of tears. “If I’m unable to, make sure it’s safe to open the door, and then get everyone out and away.”

“I’ll do it. And I won’t leave you behind.”

The plane groaned, the yawing becoming violent. We swayed back and forth so forcefully that I had to hold on to my shoulder harness to avoid being pitched sideways. The father and son yelled apologies and I love yous at one another. The elderly woman continued weeping. A businessman recited a Hail Mary.

My lips trembled and I pressed them tightly together. “What’s your name?” I asked 1A.

With a rumble, the landing gear extended.

His eyes were blue, I realized. “Clay. Clay Gandy.”

Clay in 1A. I almost laughed at the rhyme, but then the captain shouted, “Brace, brace, brace!”

I repeated the command over and over until my voice was hoarse. I wanted to close my eyes but found I couldn’t.

The plane jarred with the sound of snapping, the movement so wrenching it felt as if someone were trying to yank my bones from within my skin. We whipped to one side so quickly my neck cracked and my vision swam. Dark shadows rushed by the windows, and the splintering sound escalated.

We hit the ground with such force the oxygen masks fell from the panels above the seats and the overhead bins burst open and spilled luggage into the aisle.

Both passengers and metal screamed.

There was a horrific grinding as the plane shuddered and bucked.

Then the world exploded.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
DSCN3850_2 Emma Elliot first developed a love of suspense when she was six years old. She was hiding from her cousins and sister in a closet in her grandmother's house when she discovered a passageway, though not so secret, linking to another closet. She stumbled upon a stack of worn Bobbsey Twins mysteries in that seeming labyrinth, and she spent much of her childhood there, by choice, reading mystery novels by flashlight. Her love of reading and writing grew simultaneously. Soon she was creating her own variations of the stories she read and penning her own tales. Through bouts of working as a tutor, an editor, an apple- and peach-picker, a waitress, a dog walker, a nanny, a retail associate, and a reservationist at a ski resort, writing has remained her passion. She currently lives on the eastern seaboard and considers herself a wandering homebody. She travels often for work, which provides fodder for the imagination and plentiful hours to write her next novel while sitting in airports.

Sneak Peek Sunday: HIDDEN THREAT by Sherri Hayes

Three o’clock rolled around, and a knock sounded on Matthew’s door. He’d been staring at his phone for the last ten minutes trying to come up with an excuse to cancel his meeting with Cali Stanton today. The problem was there wasn’t a valid reason.

The knock came again, but louder this time. It could only be one person, and he knew if he didn’t respond this time, Jason would just come in anyway. “Come in,” Matthew said without enthusiasm.

Seconds later Jason was through the door and standing in front of him, hands on his hips.

Matthew stared up at his brother. “What?”

“What?” Jason said, clearly unable to believe what he was both seeing and hearing. “What? Matthew you’re supposed to be upstairs right now for your weekly briefing. You’re still here. Why?”

Matthew’s mind was scrambling for an answer, but he didn’t come up with one fast enough to suit Jason.

“What is going on? You haven’t been yourself for days, and now you’re missing meetings? This isn’t like you.”

He didn’t need Jason to tell him he wasn’t himself---he knew that already. “I’ve just had a lot of things on my mind lately.” Grabbing on to the first thing he could think of besides seeing Cali again, he said, “I talked to Martinez. The tape was tampered with.”

It took Jason only a second to fully grasp that information. “Who?”

Matthew nervously tapped his fingers on his desktop as he glanced back to his computer screen. “I don’t know, but we have to figure it out. Until we do, we can’t trust anyone.”

Jason nodded. “What do you need me to do?”

This was a strategic move, and one that Jason would always defer to his younger brother. “I need to think.” After another minute, Matthew came up with an idea, not one to solve the mystery of the security tape, but one to solve his more immediate problem. He looked up at his brother. “Do you think you could cover the meeting for me today? I’d like to pick up that tape this afternoon and take a look at it myself.”

“Yeah. Sure,” Jason said. “I’ll take care of it.”

As Jason left the room, Matthew took one last look at the computer screen and the flashing message reminding him about the meeting he’d just handed off to Jason. Matthew wouldn’t see her today. He’d stick with his plan. He could do this. Space. That’s what he needed—just a little time and space—then all would be normal again.

Grabbing his jacket, he was out the door.
