Countdown to UNDER THESE RESTLESS SKIES: Day 9 Excerpt

Under These Restless Skies will be released on February 20, and every day until then, I'll be posting a small excerpt. You can check out the book's blog here, including more excerpts and information on the Tudor historical characters in the story, and the legend of the selkies on which the story is based.

Today's Excerpt:

It was the price of it, Emma reminded herself. The price of loving a land-man was exile from the world she had known. She had known it would have its difficulties, especially as she learned to adapt to this life and its customs, but she hadn’t fully realized how difficult it would be. How could she?

As much as she loved Will and did not regret the choices she had made, she still sometimes longed for respite. She knew Will understood, and she cherished his efforts to find ways to free her from this strange and glittering cage, if only for a few moments. She wished for the comfort of his arms, but lacking that, she would hide in the hayloft for a few breaths in the warm, dusty sunshine. If nothing else, she would listen to the silence of the wind and let it carry her mind away to another place, a kingdom of salt and sand.
