October GHOSTWRITER Giveaway! Second Excerpt

All this month, I'll be celebrating the second birthday of my novel, Ghostwriter, with excerpts and prizes.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. My hero, Seth, was a witness to the terrible events of that war as an ambulance driver. Sara discovers his letters home in a trunk hidden in the attic of the island house she's renting.

Along with the excerpts, I'll be sharing some photographs that inspired me as I was writing the novel.

Today's excerpt:








That night, she dreamed of Seth again.

He met her on the beach as she came around a dune, her shoes in hand. She wore a long, light cotton dress that fluttered around her calves, something she would never wear in real life, and the shoes she held in one hand were dainty, strappy sandals. He was in his WWI uniform, the heavy, olive drab wool bizarrely out of place here in this warm, peaceful spot. Unlike the first time she had seen Seth, his uniform was crisp and clean, without a trace of blood.

Seth stood there, staring at her for a long moment. Sara took a seat on the side of the dune and looked out over the waves. After a minute or two, he sat down beside her.

“Why did you cry?” he asked abruptly.

“When?” Sara asked, blinking.

“You cried when you read Marcella’s letter.” Seth kept his gaze out on the waves. “Why?”

Sara picked up a handful of sand and let the breeze sift it through her fingers. “Because no one deserves that.”

“You don’t know what I deserve.”

She looked over at him and saw the front of his uniform was now soaked with blood. She recoiled hastily, scurrying like a crab back over the side of the dune.

“Leave,” Seth told her. “Put my letters back and leave.”

“I can’t.” The dream began to spin away and she didn’t know if he heard her last words or not. “I belong here.”

Through an old trunk of letters Sara discovers in the attic of her seaside cottage, Sara unravels the mystery and becomes caught up in a tale of greed, lost love, and the horrors of WWI. Will she be the one to break the “Fortner Curse” by helping Seth conquer his demons, and heal both of their hearts in the process?
