This year is also the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. My hero, Seth, was a witness to the terrible events of that war as an ambulance driver. Sara discovers his letters home in a trunk hidden in the attic of the island house she's renting.

“What have I done to make you think any of this was feigned?” he asked. “Do I seem to be a duplicitous man to you?”
“No. I’m sorry. It’s not you . . . I think I have trust issues. You seem too good to be true, and I’ve never been this lucky. No one like you has ever looked twice in my direction. I feel like I’ve won the grand prize in a contest I didn’t know I had entered, and I’m still afraid someone will say it was a mistake and take it away from me. And the horror of it is, I’ll be worse off than I was before, because without it, the world will seem stark and cold in a way I never noticed before.”
“Oh, Sara. You poor, sweet girl.” He turned to her and drew her against his chest.
She laid her head over his heart and the stillness beneath her ear seemed significant. Because none of this was real. She had to remember this. None of it was real. Even if he was sincere—and a small, wounded corner of her heart still doubted—it was a fantasy, a web of dreams. The only thing she wasn’t sure of anymore was whether it was her fantasy or his.

About the book:
