Countdown to UNDER THESE RESTLESS SKIES: Day 23 Excerpt

Under These Restless Skies will be released on February 20, and every day until then, I'll be posting a small excerpt. You can check out the book's blog here, including more excerpts and information on the Tudor historical characters in the story, and the legend of the selkies on which the story is based.

Today's Excerpt:

“I have set about the task of cleansing the Church of superstition and error,” Henry said. “Everyone will see, once the Church is refined, cleansed of the greedy monks and fraudulent relics. History will remember me as the king who restored the Church to Christ after throwing off the yoke of Rome.”

Will wondered about that. He thought of the dry recitations of Christian kings and their accomplishments, their wars and policies, which he now saw in a more morally ambiguous light. How many selfish actions had history attributed to pious motives? How would Henry be remembered? As the man who broke a thousand-year-old institution for love? Would history also remember how that love withered soon after he held in his arms the woman he wanted for so long?
